Blip LogoNowadays it seems as if every day some new type of miniature invention gets revealed which revolutionizes a certain niche of technology. With so many things hitting the news wire at all times, the developing theme with everyone is "how do you keep up with all this?" The truth is nobody does. Sure there are sites such as mashable.com and others that do a rather good job of covering all aspects of online technology, which innovations to watch out for, and how these innovations can and are influencing are lives but keeping up with with them is also like trying to read two books a day - it's just not happening.

What this leave us with in my belief is sub-carriers of news and that's the role I feel I play. I have a certain network of people that either engage in the same type of application useage, or they're in the field of multimedia - in most cases I make the assumption that the recommendations and suggestions I make are of some use to this group of people so today I'm going to highlight a service which isn't new, but so easy, efficient and awesome to use it deserve its spot in our news archives.

I'm speaking of Blip.fm.  Their theme is "what are you listening to?" and for those people familiar with Twitter it's easy to see that it's basically an extension of the Twitter concept, applied to what music people are listening to. As you would post links in Twitter, the main focus of Blip.fm is to post music.

At first I was confused because I didn't get how it could play the music you just typed in, but as with many music services now such as Pandora and others, the function of the music playing is simply provided by streaming whatever link you enter, or finding a link on the internet that works.

Essentially it really just this: Let's say you have a website, and you put one of your tracks in mp3 format into a folder. You have to make sure that the mp3 has an "ID3 tag" which can be entered very easily in Itunes or Winamp.  Once you have entered a link to your mp3 (and it really has to be yours) Blip.fm will pick it up on its next search. I just added some of my own mp3's so if you want to try this out simply go to Blip.fm type in "beatmassa" and you should see a bunch of items come up. From "Amp Playa Mix" to various other items including my Youtube videos that I recently added, everything comes up and is playable pretty much immediately.

Once you've found the item you want to "blip" which is after all what the whole website revolves around, you do hit enter and it shows a link to the item you entered. In most cases people enter some text to go with it - anything goes here really.

Since it's based on the Twitter concept it comes to no surprise that you can of course integrate this with twitter, facebook and various other social media websites. It's a great way of sharing what you're listening to with someone else and adding limited amounts of text to go with it.
